Conveniently located between here and there! But for those who need a bit more specifics, His & Hers Farm is located in the beautiful and rural town of Acworth, in the southwestern part of New Hampshire. This is one of the few remaining untouched areas of the state, close but just far enough from the busy tourist spots and ski areas so that the condos and developments haven’t moved in yet. We hope that they never do in order to retain the existing rural charm. A little more than 2 miles up the winding road is the iconic South Acworth Village Store, which dates back to 1865 and is like stepping back in time. In the other direction, past the historic covered bridge, is the charming village of Alstead with its busy General Store including gourmet selections of deli foods and lots of local goodies. Travel a few miles further to the beautiful towns of Walpole and Charlestown along the Connecticut River, and historic Bellows Falls, Vermont, just across the river. As the crow flies, we are about 7 miles from the river (Vermont Border) and about 30 miles north of the Massachusetts border.
“There is nothing like a dream to create the future” As the owners, operators, and residents of His & Hers Farm, Wendy and Dean Gowen are excited to share all that this historic and beautiful property has to offer. This is an idea that had been in the works since the late 1970s, when Wendy was traveling with her family through the NH and VT countryside, on the way to her Dad’s alumni events at Dartmouth College. Along the way she gained inspiration from her visits to both the Woodstock Inn and Grafton Inn. In fact, it was this inspiration and her dream to run a country inn that prompted her to go to the Cornell University School of Hotel Management. Mix that inspiration with a husband that she met at Cornell, and that happens to have grown up on a farm in New Hampshire, and the rest is history! Wendy and Dean were married in 1987 and after a few moves, found themselves living in Buffalo, NY for thirty years and raising three children. They created a wonderful life for themselves with great friends and neighbors in the Western New York area. After their kids had all grown and moved on, they had an opportunity to move back home to Acworth, (while maintaining close work relationships in WNY) and to make a dream come true with running a Guest House and Event Venue. This also meant being able to live next to Dean’s parents at Tamarack Farm and near other family members.
Handsome, debonair, and very charming, Jameson is a Fox Red Labrador Retriever. Laying around doing very little is what keeps him motivated, as he awaits his next snack or meal. His most unique (and might we say endearing) trait is that he often sticks out his tongue, and sleeps with it hanging out of his mouth. Jameson is great at greeting our guests upon arrival to the farm and helps to run the guest house with his sister from another mister, Malibu. Sweet, cuddly and a bit shy at first, but an absolute doll. Malibu may even head to the other room upon your arrival, but then gingerly make her presence known. Mali is a small Chocolate Lab, and loves being petted. Oh, and lastly, Daphne our cat is less of a greeter, but might make her presence known during your stay as she passes through. If you're lucky she might even play the piano for you! In warmer months, she's most often hanging out in our screen porch, or sitting near a window watching the birds.
So you may be wondering how the current farm name came about, especially since the former name was the Green Meadow Farm. Well, much consideration and deliberation went into the new name as we wanted a fresh start and didn’t want to have any confusion with the previous Bed & Breakfast business from 20 years ago. However, we wanted to make sure that we paid respect and homage to the almost 140 year legacy left by the Newton family, and to the farm that was so prominent and well known throughout the area.
For decades, there were nameplates over the garage, one said “HIS” and one said “HERS.” These signs had become not only familiar icons within the local area, but also had become way-finding signs for travelers. Once our newly rebuilt garage structure was finished, it was only natural to replace the old signs (now sitting on our fireplace in the great room) with new ones (on the new garage), out of respect for Leon and Ella Newton, but also to give back that point of reference and familiarity to passersby.
As we were trying to figure out a name for our new home, business and overall setting that covered many of our bases, both current and past, it seemed only natural to call the place “His & Hers Farm.”
